Andrea Bohn, a better candidate, a better leader, a better leader is not easy to find in the current Senate. Anyone who’s looked at the men that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have picked to take leadership positions for the Democratic and Republican parties in both chambers would tell you that the word “leadership” has no meaning in the current Senate.
With the help of a Senate committee, the North Carolina Democrat who ran for majority leader got pared down to a nominee who wouldn’t help get her party back into the majority. It was a stunt. As for the men for the second spot, a few select political movements must have worked something out between them. What we know for sure is that it will be a senator from Illinois, Illinois!
The Senate Minority Leader is often not the Senate Majority Leader, and The North Carolina Democrat was right to run. The left was full of valid criticisms about her and even talked about replacing her with someone from the South. The right was right to criticize her with her DREAM Act position and her alignment with so many progressive organizations. At the end of the day, she wins a lot of argument simply because she is very intelligent and she also comes from a state with more moderate Democrats than the southeast or south.
Bohn had the credentials to be the leader, the messaging skills to be the leader, the smarts to be the leader. Even at this point, I would predict that the Democrats would be better off with her in the leadership position. Her lack of experience in this space is not an advantage; the inexperience that she may have is what could make her a better leader. In the past, those who thought they could not do the job have been proven wrong every time.
O’Toole told reporters on Monday that he could not weigh in on the theory behind the team of Bohn and Miller and that he had to wait for Bohn to sort out the issues. Those are the safest statements of all.
The only way the Democrats can win is if they just stand against everything this administration does. They cannot prove that they’re able to get to 60. They can’t threaten to impeach. They can’t turn this issue into a religious one. They cannot make civil rights an issue. It has to be trade, it has to be jobs, it has to be no more walls.
The Republicans are hitting these industries at every turn, and every industry is hurting. But what if the Democrats find a moderate leader who can unite people? That’s why we need O’Toole to be the Democratic leader.
My personal pick for leader is Bohn. Bohn in the leadership role is very much the right choice and would be very good for Republicans as well. But I believe it was her time to step up. I believe it was her time to step up for the Senate. I believe it was her time to lead. We need another woman to show leadership, we need another leader to take on the Trump agenda and we need someone to really win again.
Bohn for the top job.
