On Wednesday, CNN announced its top 10 CNN Heroes, a tribute to unsung heroes and heroes of children who have made remarkable and life-changing contributions.
Many of the heroes being honoured were children, like the four girls who are helping to make life a little easier for cancer patients by inspiring them.
In July, CNN will celebrate all these heroes as it marks the 10th anniversary of the Heroes Initiative, which aims to shine a spotlight on individuals who make positive impacts on their communities.
The 10 CNN Heroes This year’s Heroes Initiative honourees include Angel Fox, a high school student working with kids with cancer, including Angel Snow, one of them; Bede Vaneka, a firefighter who volunteered more than 65,000 hours and earned 1,000 community service awards; Amy Falzarano, a teacher who visits kids with chronic health conditions, like her own son, Bret, and helps them overcome illnesses; the rescuers from the White Collar and Vietnamese communities who rescued a family that was stranded at sea; Vivian Chu, a determined mother who found a boy who was playing Russian roulette and got him help; Katherine Carter, a single mother who lost both of her daughters in a high school shooting and is determined to make sure that similar tragedies don’t happen again; and teacher Ryan Ahonen, who donated his $1.5m winning lottery ticket to help kids with developmental delays.
A total of 35 individuals have been chosen for this year’s honours, which are named in honour of CNN’s former Washington bureau chief, Leslie Stahl.
Each of the honourees is highlighted and featured in a primetime CNN special, and each receives an award from Stahl.

CNN ‘s Allison Raskin said: “Ten years ago, I remember asking Leslie Stahl for a personal request – ‘what would you name a new award in honor of?’
“Her suggestion was an initiative to recognise heroes, and we’ve been honoured by her generous commitment ever since.”
Each year, CNN goes to great lengths to find and celebrate such heroes.

The honourees are a list of stories CNN decided on after months of investigation. They are selected by the network’s editorial staff at its bureau in Washington DC, who round up stories from reporters around the world that they believe embody the spirit of heroism.
The honourees were announced on Friday night, and will appear in the CNN Heroes 2019 special, which airs on 28 July.

How can you nominate your own heroes?
Some CNN Heroes receive a nomination from you. You can nominate them by sharing a link to their story via CNN Heroes or on iReport.
In order to be nominated, they must be based in the United States.
You can nominate multiple people or organisations, but in order to be considered, you must be able to tell CNN about them in detail.
You do not need to be an adult. You can nominate people aged up to 18 years old, but children cannot be nominated.
CNN’s best-known social impact initiative, Give, ran for more than 15 years. The programme recognised more than 8,500 people and awarded $53m (£42m) in grants, so you can see some of the successes that CNN’s ‘Humans of New York’ and Social Impact series have helped bring to life in recent years.
But you don’t have to wait until the awards take place in December to honour your heroes.
Take a look at our 2016 list for some ideas and inspiration.
You can find more suggestions for those who would like to nominate themselves.
We’d love to hear your stories too!
