One person was killed and four others injured in a shooting attack in Jerusalem Saturday, according to officials.
The attack took place at a popular tourist site in the city, at Jerusalem’s Jaffa Gate. According to a statement from the Israeli government, one attacker was killed and four others were injured, including one person in serious condition. The attacker was “shot and killed by security forces,” according to the statement.
Police did not release the identity of the perpetrator of the attack, who allegedly took aim at soldiers and police officers in the compound before fleeing the scene, according to media reports.
The compound houses the Damascus Gate, Herod’s Gate and the Western Wall, and is frequented by millions of Jews who come to pray at the Western Wall.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack and offered his condolences to the victims and their families.
“The vile attempts of terror to scuttle the work and peace of the State of Israel will not succeed,” he said in a statement.
