Canadian pop singer Camila Cabello made her way to international fame last year with the hit single “Havana,” but it seems as if it was as soon as she had started recording new music that her relationship with Shawn Mendes came to an end.
According to The Sun, the two actually split during recording of their sophomore album because their romance turned “stale.” Neither has commented on the report but Mendes was seen hugging and watching Cabello sing on stage in Vancouver on Thursday. They were all smiles as they laughed and chatted together during the performance.
Both were involved in high-profile relationships before they released their solo albums. Cabello was linked to Fifth Harmony singer Normani Kordei when the former “X Factor” singers appeared on Simon Cowell’s reality show in 2016. Mendes was dating dancer Eiza Gonzalez when “Havana” went on to become the most downloaded song of 2017, garnering Cabello her first Grammy. The couple broke up a few months later and there hasn’t been any public comment from either.
Bills, concerts and other romantic commitments came first for Mendes, and it is easy to understand why the 19-year-old wanted to focus on his career right now. The 26-year-old briefly dated “Riverdale” actress Lili Reinhart, but the two split and became friends again just a few months later. The two went to Cabello’s concert at Manhattan’s Radio City Music Hall in May after Mendes called Cabello and Reinhart his “idols.”
Both singers also discussed being supportive of the #MeToo movement on social media this year. Mendes released a song, “Lost in Japan,” which addresses his past sexual experience with friends of a close family member, while Cabello released “Consequences,” about a crush on someone she’s been in a relationship with.
If Mendes’ breakup with Cabello is indeed true, I’m sure the rest of the world can’t wait to see what the two collaborate on in the future.
